A border with a brief to create a calm space for children who need a relaxed space and can get sensory overload; Surrounded by green foliage with some seasonal white flowers, there is a lawn in the middle, with space to sit, to meditate, to rest, to read, or to build a nest to feel safe.

Winter Garden at Kings College
After many years as a lawn and seasonal bedding, this space has been redesigned as a Winter Garden focusing on interest when the students are on campus. Regular additions to the scheme have been mixed with natives such as foxgloves (Digitalis purpurea), teasels (Dipsacus fullonum) and native ferns (Asplenium scolopendrium and Dryopteris filix-mas.
During the build no green waste was removed, and instead made into an incline to add topography that creates different microclimates within the space, and logs have been introduced for structure with both additions helping to add to the biodiversity of a previously more sterile space.
In its first summer many self seeding annuals contained within the seed bank have germinated and there has been a curation of which are allowed to grow, and which have been weeded out.

Sustainable Bedding at Kings College
Introducing new ways of creating beautiful seasonal displays that nod to the past but without leaving too much imprint in their creation. Spaces were previously populated with plants that were entirely bought in and then composted, but now much is grown from seed and hardy perennials are used which require a lot less resources and can be used again either within these seasonal beds or within the rest of the campus.
